When Weeds Creep In: Recognizing Negative Self-Talk Negative self-talk often arrives quietly. It shows up in the moments when we are tired, overwhelmed, or comparing ourselves to others. It can sound like: I am not doing enough. I am not good enough. Nothing I do seems to work. I should be further along by now. I do not like the way I look. If I looked different, I would be happier. Body image thoughts can be some of the toughest. When we speak harshly about our bodies, we drain energy from the very place we need it most. Our bodies carry us, support us, and reflect the story of everything we have lived through. They deserve compassion. The way we speak to ourselves can also shape what we allow from others. If our inner voice becomes used to criticism, we may unintentionally accept it from the outside too. This is why awareness matters. The moment we notice a thought that feels unkind or unhelpful, we have the opportunity to shift it. Planting New Thoughts Awareness is the first step. Once we recognize a negative thought, we can choose a gentler one that supports our growth. It is not about ignoring difficult feelings. It is about offering ourselves the same patience we extend to others. Here are a few examples: ✔ I cannot do this becomes -I am learning as I go and that is enough. ✔ I failed becomes -That did not work out, but I am growing through it. ✔ I am behind becomes -I am moving at my own pace, just like nature does. ✔ I do not like my body becomes -My body carries me through every day. I am grateful for its strength. Each shift is a small act of care. Over time, these small shifts add up, and the inner landscape begins to feel more supportive and steady. We first connected with school counselor Rachel Ferris from the Clifton E. Lawrence School in Sussex, New Jersey late last spring, and ever since, we’ve been so excited to bring our You Are a Gardener® SEL Assembly to their wonderful school community. This visit officially kicked off our 2025–2026 school year assembly lineup, and it was the perfect place to start. Set in the beautiful pastoral community of Sussex County, the drive to the Clifton E. Lawrence School was a reminder of how inspiring it is to bring our program to schools in every corner of the garden state. The students and staff were incredibly welcoming and engaged from the moment we arrived, creating such a positive and uplifting atmosphere for our presentation. We are so thankful to the students for their kindness, enthusiasm, and genuine engagement throughout the assembly, you helped make the day truly special. This visit was especially meaningful because it was the first time all three Gardeners — Shanna, Anna, and Aidan — led an SEL assembly together. Growing forward, the trio will be teaming up for most school assemblies and student programs, offering a heartfelt and relatable perspective on what it means to grow up a gardener. Hearing from Gardener Anna and Gardener Aidan gives students a wonderful peer-to-peer connection and shows how emotional growth can take root at any age. Our updated presentation featured new AI video elements, a foxtastic slide show, and interactive activities designed to make the experience educational, empowering, and entertaining. These student programs are created to nurture emotional growth and help students build resilience through kindness, self-awareness, and connection. They quietly grow beneath the surface, shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us. Every gardener has the power to tend to what’s within, release what feels heavy, and lighten our load and let go of emotional weight with awareness, compassion, and love. When our weeds feel heavy, it’s a sign that our garden needs care and attention. We all have them — young and grown gardeners alike. The good news is, with awareness and intention, we can begin to release what’s been weighing us down and let go of emotional weight so we can grow lighter, stronger, and more rooted in love. The heaviest weeds are usually the ones that have been with us the longest. They have taken root deep inside, often growing from fears we haven’t faced or experiences we haven’t fully released. These are the weeds that whisper thoughts like “I’m not good enough,” "I don't look my best", “I don’t belong,” “I’m scared,” or “No one understands me.” To pull our weeds, we first need to bring them to the surface so we can see them clearly. The act of naming what’s been hiding inside helps us understand where it came from and why it’s been growing there. Once we see our weeds with honesty and compassion, they begin to lose their power, and healing has space to take root. 🔎 Identification Detector- Bring Your Heavy Weeds to the Surface to Lighten Your Load and Let Go of Emotional Weight Heavy weeds often have deep roots. They can grow from past uncomfortable encounters, painful memories, consistent exposure to negative situations, or unresolved emotions we’ve carried for years. When we pause to notice what’s beneath the surface, we start to understand why certain feelings keep showing up — and what they’re trying to tell us. Heavy weeds can sometimes look like: Fear of rejection or not feeling accepted Loneliness, even when surrounded by others Insecurities that make us doubt our worth Jealousy that clouds our ability to celebrate others Anger or resentment that lingers after being hurt Shutting down or closing ourselves off to protect our hearts Awareness helps us listen with compassion — to both our emotions and our bodies — so we can begin to care for what needs healing. Sometimes our body lets us know when a weed has been growing too long. You might notice signs like: Frequent headaches or tightness in your body Frequent stomach aches or changes in appetite. If you’re creating your own garden: Draw your garden — include flowers, plants, and a few open patches of soil. In the soil or near the roots , write your heavy weeds, such as worry, fear, comparison, or sadness. Above the soil or near the flowers , write the qualities you want to grow, like kindness, calm, confidence, or connection. Seeing both the weeds and the flowers on the same page helps us understand what’s been hidden beneath the surface. It reminds every gardener that awareness is the first step toward letting go. 🌱 Step 2: Communicate and Connect Once we recognize what’s been weighing us down, the next step is to express it. Sometimes we have someone to talk to, like a parent, teacher, partner, friend, or counselor. Other times, we may not, and that’s okay too. Whether we talk about it with someone we trust or practice self-expression through writing, reflection, or quiet thought, we begin the process of release and healing. Ways to Release What’s Heavy: ✅ Talk with someone you trust about what’s been on your mind ✅ Write your feelings in a journal to move them out of your head and onto paper ✅ Create something small that represents how you have been feeling — a doodle, a poem, or even a note to yourself. ✅ Take a few slow, deep breaths, imagining the heavy weeds leaving your body as you exhale. ✅ Sit quietly and say out loud, “I’m ready to let this go and set it free. I’m ready to release what has been weighing me down.” Each time we share, write, or express what’s heavy, we clear space for something lighter to grow. Healing happens when we make room for peace and understanding to take root. That’s how we start to heal and begin to let go. 🌱 Step 3: Choose Healthy Gardening Tools After we’ve taken time to identify our heavy weeds and express what’s been weighing us down, the next step is to care for our garden with intention. This means focusing on what helps us heal and grow. Healthy gardening tools guide us toward balance, calm, and connection, reminding us that growth happens when we treat ourselves with patience, kindness, and love. Love helps us see beyond differences and reminds us that every gardener is growing through their own season. It softens judgment, quiets fear, and helps us plant seeds of patience, kindness, and respect. Leading with love means showing kindness to ourselves as we grow. It’s remembering that growth takes time, and love helps us find peace in every stage of it.
