- Meet Gardener Margaux -Licensed Associate Counselor
Hello gardeners! Today, we are excited to feature Margaux Rustad MA, LAC , with whom we have been collaborating with since late spring. Gardener Margaux is a Licensed Associate Counselor at Ellie Mental Health in Parsippany, NJ. She reached out to Gardener Shanna directly for guidance on developing a group counseling program based on the You Are a Gardener® foundation. Having attended a #PullYourWeeds® event a couple of years back, Gardener Margaux resonated deeply with our message. Collaboratively, we outlined easy and impactful methods to incorporate our vocabulary and mindset into counseling sessions for young children. Let’s check in with Gardener Margaux to see how it’s growing: "I implemented a loose curriculum based on some activities and the language of the book with a couple of my kiddos, and so far, it has been really positive! One kiddo even mentioned that she had seen the book at school which made me happy. I think it has been helpful for me too, to engage in getting comfortable with the language and the activities as almost a "trial run" of what will work best in a counseling setting. I have learned that the kiddos can relate to the language and find it makes it easier for them to express their emotions, plus utilizing the badges to make it even more engaging. Parents have also responded positively to the curriculum, as I have presented them with the tools we use in session to also incorporate at home. Overall, I have taken a lot of positives away from this, and am really hopeful that this will give me a better handle on how to make it the most effective group in the future! I hope all is well with you, and am looking forward to more collaboration as I continue to "research" in individual sessions for the group setting!" - Happy To Be bACK
Happy to be bACK on ACK (aka Nantucket)! In 2018, the first year of our children's book, "You Are a Gardener®," we captured a photo of Gardener Anna & Gardener Aidan holding our book in front of Mister Rogers' Nantucket home. Little did we realize then that this simple act would evolve into an annual family tradition, symbolizing the remarkable growth of our platform and the personal growth of Anna and Aidan. Before this tradition began, we used to pass by the Crooked House, the summer residence in Madaket on Nantucket, envisioning Fred and Joanne Rogers drawing inspiration from their serene retreat and the scenic Madaket Harbor. Fred Rogers' significant impact on children, families, and educators continues to ripple through our culture today, and continues to grow stronger with every kindhearted 'gardener' worldwide. Our little family tradition serves as a constant inspiration for us, motivating us to continue to nurture and sow seeds of empowerment among ‘gardeners’ of all generations. By providing a universal vocabulary , mindset , and healthy ‘gardening tools’ , we aim to help gardeners of all ages maintain a sense of confidence, creativity, and a calm perspective, in efforts to cultivate the seeds for positive change. - Becoming a Beekeeper- Fear to Fascination
Hello, Gardener friends! It’s Gardener Kelsey here, and I’m buzzing with excitement to share my adventure of becoming a beekeeper with you! You might already know that honeybees are super important to our world, but do you know why? Honey Bees help plants grow by pollinating flowers, which means they move pollen from one flower to another, helping plants make seeds and fruits. Without honeybees, many of the delicious fruits and vegetables we eat wouldn’t grow as well. Sadly, honeybees are at risk of disappearing because of things like pesticides, diseases, and habitat loss. This makes it extra important for us to take care of them! Scroll down to watch Gardener Kelsey's brand new buzz worthy video! Gardener Kelsey & Her Bees -Summer 2024 Now, let’s talk about how amazing honeybee hives are. A hive is like a busy little city where every bee has a job to do. There are worker bees, drone bees, and of course, the queen bee! Worker bees collect nectar, build the hive, and take care of baby bees. Drone bees help the queen make new bees. And the queen? She’s the star of the hive, laying all the eggs. It’s like watching a tiny, bustling community in action, and I think that’s incredibly fascinating! Did you know that 99% of the bees in a hive are females? That’s right, girl power! When I first started beekeeping, I was a little scared. Imagine being surrounded by thousands of buzzing bees – it’s pretty loud! But I learned to trust my bee suit, which keeps me safe. Over time, my fear has turned into fascination (weeds to seeds). I get to watch baby bees grow up, find the queen bee, check on honey levels, watch the 'waggle dance' and so much more. Becoming a beekeeper has required that I use many of my gardening tools. It requires patience and calm, just like when you’re learning a new skill or meeting a new animal friend. It has also given me confidence because I have learned to quell my fears and care for these amazing insects. Beekeeping is not just about bees; it’s about understanding nature, learning new things, and growing as a person. Plus...delicious, local honey isn't a bad bonus! << CLICK THE PLAY BUTTON TO WATCH GARDENER KELSEY'S NEW VIDEO >> So, if you ever get a chance to learn about beekeeping, I highly recommend it. It’s a beautiful, buzzing adventure that teaches you about life, nature, and yourself. Thanks for reading, gardeners!
- A Garden of Emotions
As gardeners, we experience a garden of emotions on a day to day basis. Weeds represent our negative feelings such as sadness, fear, anger, loneliness, upset, embarrassment, and frustration, while flowers represent our joy, happiness, and gratitude. As gardeners, we work hard to get our positive feelings to grow healthy and strong . It's important to be prepared with the right ‘gardening tools’ to help ourselves when our weeds pop up to overcome our challenges. One of the most powerful tools we have as gardeners is talking about those uncomfortable feelings with people we trust. The core message of our book, "You Are a Gardener," emphasizes the significance of communicating with trusted individuals about our uncomfortable feelings, difficult thoughts, and challenging emotions, especially for children. By keeping the lines of communication open, especially from a young age, we are planting the seeds for strong emotional health and resilience. As gardeners, there are many trusted gardeners out there who are available to help us get to the root of our weeds, in efforts to plant new seeds and appreciate our flowers. Encouraging young gardeners to communicate with family members, teachers, counselors, and trusted educators can greatly benefit their social and emotional growth. Through engaging narratives and beautiful illustrations, our book encourages gardeners of all ages to view our minds as gardens full of emotions that need nurturing and care. It empowers gardeners to identify emotions, especially our ‘weeds’ and to understand that it's okay to seek help when we are feeling challenged. Just as a gardener needs gardening tools, our book provides practical strategies, a vocabulary and mindset to help gardeners of all ages manage feelings and navigate life's ups and downs. Our "You Are a Gardener" children’s book and platform, fosters a supportive environment where children, families and educators can join in the conversation, creating a community that values mental well-being. By normalizing discussions about emotions, we pave the way for a future where gardeners of all generations can flourish with the confidence to face our ‘weeds’ head-on, knowing we are never alone in our journey. Ultimately, our book serves as a gentle reminder that, with the right care and attention, every garden can flourish, and every gardener can thrive. Dig into into our children's book "You Are a Gardener®." The importance of nurturing seeds of emotional empowerment is needed now more than ever before. Our book uses gardening vocabulary as emotional metaphors to help empower gardeners of all ages by enhancing their emotional awareness, facilitating communication of feelings with trusted individuals, and choosing positive "gardening tools" to cultivate a calm, confident, and creative mindset.
